Questions

Why did my transparent PNG gain a white background?

JPEG has no transparency. The converter fills transparent pixels with white so the subject does not turn black. Choose PNG or WebP to keep transparency.

Is the conversion done on a server?

No. The browser decodes the image and encodes the format you selected. The file is not uploaded.
