How to convert a file size
- 1Enter a number and the unit it is in.
- 2Say whether that unit is decimal (1 KB = 1,000 bytes) or binary (1 KiB = 1,024 bytes).
- 3Read the same size across bytes, KB, MB, GB and the binary units.
Questions
Why is a 1 MB file not 1,024 KB?
Decimal megabytes use powers of 1,000. Binary mebibytes use powers of 1,024. A drive sold as 1 TB holds about 0.91 tebibytes, which is why the operating system shows a smaller number.
Which system should I pick?
Network speeds and many file listings use decimal. Memory and a lot of operating-system file sizes use binary. The table shows both so you can match the source you are reading.
