How to encode a URL

  2. 2Use component mode for a query value. Use full URI mode when the string already contains : / ? &.
  3. 3Decode when you have a percent-encoded string and want the readable text.

Questions

Which mode should I use for a search query?

Component mode. It encodes characters such as &, = and spaces so they cannot be mistaken for separators in the query string.

Why did decoding fail?

A stray percent sign, or a percent not followed by two hex digits, is not valid percent-encoding. The original text is left in place and the error is shown.
